One of the big surprises in Tuesday's Primary election was in the Democrat Race in Akron Ward 6.

Long-time Councilman Bob Otterman was defeated by political newcomer Bob Hoch. The difference in the race, 71 votes.

The 61-year old Hoch is a retired manager at ACME.

The 79-year old Otterman has served in elective offices for more than 40 years at the Municipal, County and State Levels.

Hoch says he 'was surprised' at the results of yesterday's election. Hoch believes people in the Ellet community wanted a 'new voice' to represent them at Akron City Hall. He says the decision has nothing 'to do with Bob Otterman, its just that people wanted change.'

Hoch will face Republican David Goodspeed in November for the Ward 6 Council seat.

The University of Akron women’s golf team moved up two spots on Tuesday to conclude the 2011 Chip-N Club Invitational in seventh place at the par-72, 6,186-yard Country Club of Lincoln.

The Zips carded a final-round 310 to finish the event with a three-round tally of 947 (+83). SMU captured the team title with a final score of 920 (+56).

Leading the way for the Zips were senior Kristen Hill and freshman Sara Johansson, both earning top-25 finishes to open the season. Hill earned her 16th-consecutive top-25 finish after concluding the day in a tie for 18th place (233, +17) thanks to a final-round 77. Johansson closed out her first collegiate event tied for 23rd place after carding an 81 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 236 (+20).

Senior Katie Jenior flirted with a top-25 finish after a slow start on Monday, taking home sole possession of 27th place with a score of 238 (+22) following a round of 77.

Senior Amanda Butler had the top score of the tournament for the Zips, firing a 3-over 75 during the third round to finish tied for 38th place with a final score of 243 (+27). Sophomore Sara Chaves closed out the squad in a tie for 49th place after posting a two-day tally of 247 (+31).

There will be no rest for the Zips as the squad returns to action on Sept. 19 at the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup at the Cardinal Cup Golf Course in Simpsonville, Ky.

The Browns have signed veteran punter Brad Maynard to replace Richmond McGee, who injured his back in pregame warmups Sunday and is out for the season.

Maynard, a 14-year NFL veteran, played the past 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears. He was released in July and spent the exhibitionseason with Houston.

McGee herniated a back disk during warmups before the season opener against Cincinnati, his agent told the Associated Press yesterday. Agent David Canter said McGee's back was so bad he lost feeling in his legs. He kicked anyway, averaging just 36 yards on eight punts in his pro debut.

Cleveland has placed McGee on injured reserve. Coach Pat Shurmur didn't mention McGee's injury following Sunday's game or during his Monday news conference.

McGee was signed in August after punter Reggie Hodges tore his Achilles' tendon in practice and was lost for the season.

David Murphy had a pair of solo home runs among his four hits and Josh Hamilton put the AL West-leading Texas Rangers ahead to stay with his 20th homer in a 10-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians last night.

Murphy already had both of his homers, his 10th and 11th of the season, before Hamilton hit a scorching liner off Justin Masterson (11-10) into the right-center field seats by the Texas bullpen for a 4-2 lead in the fifth.

Adrian Beltre extended his hitting streak to 17 games, matching a career high, when he led off the seventh with a 411-foot blast.

Matt Harrison (12-9) gave up three runs on seven hits while pitching into the sixth inning in his first start in nine days. The left-hander struck out four and walked one.

The Indians' Carlos Santana had a pair of home runs in the game, numbers 22 and 23 of the season.

Before the game, the Indians added right-hander Zach Putman to their bullpen.Putman, who has never pitched in the majors, went 6-3 with a 3.65 ERA and nine saves in 44 appearances for Columbus.

Outfielder Shin-Soo Choo (left oblique strain) and right-hander Josh Tomlin (right elbow soreness) rejoined the Indians to continuetheir rehabs.

Games at Bowl Championship Series programs Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State and Tennessee as well as a home-and-home series with BCS foe Pittsburgh highlight The University of Akron football program's non-league schedule for 2012-16, a portion of which was announced on Tuesday.

In addition to traveling to SEC opponent Tennessee (Sept. 22) next season, the Zips will play host to Central Florida, out of Conference USA, in the 2012 season opener on Thursday, Aug. 30 at InfoCision Stadium – Summa Field. UA rounds out non-league play next year with a visit to Sun Belt Conference member Florida International on Sept. 8 – a return of this season's Homecoming contest with the Panthers in Akron on Oct. 8 – and a home game against MEAC opponent Morgan State on Sept. 15, marking the Bears' first return to UA following a 41-0 defeat in 2009 in the inaugural game at InfoCision Stadium.

"It's great for our program to have an opportunity to play in some of the more historic venues in college football," second-year Akron head coach Rob Ianello said. "I know our players will be excited to compete in these games. Also, many of these games are within driving distance, which makes it easy for our fans and the families of our players to travel and support us. By design our non-league schedule will help prepare us for MAC play each season."

Akron begins the 2013 season by traveling to UCF on Aug. 31, then returns home to take on FCS opponent James Madison, from the Colonial Athletic Association, one week later. JMU was national champion in 2004. A trip to Big Ten opponent Michigan (Sept. 14) follows during week three and then UA takes on Sun Belt Conference member Louisiana-Lafayette at home on Sept. 21. It will mark the Zips' first time facing either James Madison, Louisiana-Lafayette or Michigan. UCF competed against Akron as a Mid-American Conference member in 2002 and 2003, with the programs splitting those meetings. UA owns a 4-2 advantage in the all-time series with the Golden Knights, dating to 1984.

In 2014, the Blue and Gold will begin the home-and-home series with Pittsburgh (Sept. 27) as well as with Marshall (Sept. 20) as the Zips travel to the Panthers and face the Thundering Herd at home. Akron and Pitt have not met since 1998 and the Zips and the Herd will meet for the 12th time on the gridiron. Marshall was a member of the MAC from 1954-68 and 1977-2004. A visit to Big Ten program Penn State (Sept. 6) is also on the docket that season, the first trip to Happy Valley since 2009.

A trip to Notre Dame (Sept. 26), the return game by Pittsburgh (Sept. 12) at InfoCision Stadium and a return contest at Louisiana-Lafayette (Sept. 5) come in 2015. The Zips only prior meeting with Notre Dame came in 1910. Ianello was a member of the Fighting Irish staff from 2005-09, serving as assistant head coach in his final season. Former UA head coach Gerry Faust (1986-94), who currently resides in the Akron area and is an active supporter of Zips Athletics, was head coach at Notre Dame from 1981-85.

The Zips complete the home-and-home with Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., in 2016. Additional non-league matchups for the 2014, '15 and '16 season will be announced at a later date.

This isn't the start the University of Akron Football team wanted. Losses to Ohio State and Temple have put the Zips at 0-2 on the season.

The road doesn't bet any easier this week for Akron as they take on the Cincinnati Bearcats at Nippert Stadium in the Queen City.

Zips head coach Rob Ianello says he was disappointed with the score in the MAC Conference opener last Saturday against Temple at InfoCision Stadium.

Ianello says the 79-minute rain delay that took place in Saturday's game hurt his young football team. He says the veteran Temple team handled the stoppage much better than the Zips.

How do the Zips turn things around? 'Getting back to fundamentals', said Ianello. 'Block better. Tackle better. Our guys are looking to get back on the practice field today and moving forward.'

Ianello said "Cincinnati is a tremendous opponent. You look at their offense, they have a minimum of three terrific skilled position players."

Akron closed out the day with a score of 637 (+61) after posting rounds of 318 and 319. Redlands Community College holds a one-shot lead over second place with a two-round total of 613 (+37).

Freshman Sara Johansson, competing in her first collegiate event, led the way for the Zips with a score of 155 (+11) after posting rounds of 77 ad 78. She enters the final round in a tie for 18th place.

Senior Kristen Hill also sits in the top-25, posting a score of 12-over 156. She followed her first-round 77 with a second-round 79 to end the day tied for 21st place. Fellow senior Katie Jenior sits five shots behind Hill in a tie for 42nd with a two-round tally of 161 (+17, 81-80).

Sophomore Sara Chaves is tied for 53rd place after two rounds, recording rounds of 83 and 82 on the day (+21, 165). Senior Amanda Butler rounded out the scoring five in a tie for 58th place (+24, 168). Butler carded scores of 83 and 85.

Early this morning, Stow Police received a tip of two men operating a meth lab at a residence at 2106  Uniondale Drive.

When police arrived on the scene, they located the two men operating the lab in the garage as well as throughout the residence.

Police say one of the men had a weapon in his hand when they arrived and fled into the home with the apparent intent to hide the revolver.

Police took into custody, without incident, Stow residents 38-year old Lewis Butler Junior of Uniondale Drive and 41-year old Stephen McKinney of Norman Drive. The pair are charged with the illegal manufacture of drugs and McKinney is facing an additional weapons charge.

The drug charges are felonies because of the presence of a two-year old child in the home.

Butler and McKinney will have a video arraignment today in Stow Municipal Court.

Indians Senior Vice-President of Public Relations Bobby DiBiasio thinks fans will be pleased with the performance of the Tribe during the 2011 Major League Baseball season.

DiBiasio says fans will be happy with the season the Indians had, but disappointed with the way they finished.  Today, the record for the Indians is 72-72 with 18 games remaining.

DiBiasio says the team did what they needed to do in 2011, and that is get the team back in position to return to post-season baseball. 

One of the major goals for the Indians for the 2012 season is to get and stay healthy.  And DiBiasio says the Tribe needs to insure that the pitching staff, both starting and relief is in place.  DiBiasio says many fans have learned that a strong bullpen in the American League combined with good starting pitching is a formula to stay in the pennant race.

DiBiasio points out that when Asdrubal Cabrera, Grady Sizemore, Shin Soo-Choo and Travis Hafner together were in the line-up in 2011, the Tribe had a record of 10-7.  Projected out over an entire season, the Indians record would be 95-67. 

The Indians continue their 11-day, 10-game road trip tonight when they open up a three-game series in Texas against the Rangers.

While the Indians may be out of the Central Division race, the Rangers are still battling the Los Angeles Angels for the top spot in the American League Western Division. Texas has a two-and-a-half game lead over the Angels with 15 games to play.

The Indians still have 18 games to play in the 2011 season. The Tribe has a record of 72-72 and are in a tie with the White Sox for second place in the Central Division. Chicago's record is 73-73. Both teams are 11.5-games behind the Detroit Tigers who have won theit last 10 games in a row.

The pitching match-up tonight for the Indians and the Rangers will be Justin Masterson for the Indians and Matt Harrison for Texas. On Wednesday night, David Huff will go for the Tribe and Thursday night, the Indians will send Fausto Carmona to the mound.
