Fausto Carmona allowed four hits over 8 1-3 innings and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 4-1 last night.

The win kept Chicago from passing the Indians and moving into second place in the AL Central.

White Sox starter Mark Buehrle (10-6) allowed a season-high 12 hits and had his streak of consecutive starts allowing three runs or less snapped at 18 games. Buehrle allowed four runs in 7 1-3 innings.

Shin-soo Choo had three hits and drove in a run for the Indians, while Carlos Santana singled, doubled and scored a run.

Alexei Ramirez homered for the White Sox. Chicago's Gordon Beckham grounded out with two runners on to end the game.

The Akron Aeros hit three solo home runs, but the Harrisburg Senators hit three homers of their own that accounted for four runs as they won game two of a three-game series 5-3 Wednesday at Canal Park.

Left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland allowed all three Senators home runs and suffered the loss for Akron pitching six innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits, walking three and striking out three.

Right-handed pitcher Tanner Roark recorded the win for Harrisburg tossing 7.2 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits and striking out eight while walking one. Right-hander Hassan Pena got the last three outs to earn the save.

Derek Norris hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to give the Senators an early 1-0 lead.

The Aeros (64-59) answered in the bottom of the second with a pair of solo home runs from Juan Diaz and Raul Padron that gave them a 2-1 lead.

Akron’s third solo shot came off the bat of Ben Copeland in the bottom of the third inning increasing the lead to 3-1.

The Senators (69-54) answered with back-to-back home runs in top of the fifth inning. Leonard Davis hit a two-run home run and Tyler Moore followed with a solo homer of his own to give Harrisburg a 4-3 lead.

Harrisburg added a run in the top of the seventh inning and went on to the win.

The Aeros and Senators will play the rubber match of this three-game series on Thursday. Akron will give the ball to right-handed pitcher Austin Adams, who is 9-9 with a 4.00 ERA in 2011. He will face left-handed pitcher Danny Rosenbaum, who is 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

It is a “Buck Up” Thirsty Thursday, presented by the Ohio Lottery, with $1 beers and $1 soft drinks through the seventh inning.

The shooting incident that we told you about near the intersection of Beechwood and Norway on Akron's west Side early this morning has resulted in a death.

Akron Police and the Summit County Medical Examiners Office are investigating the shooting death of 19-year old Yusef Daniels of Donald Avenue in Akron.

Akron Police discovered Daniels lying in the devil strip in front of 395 Beechwood, unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Daniels was transported to Akron General Medical Center where died from his injury at around 2:30 this morning.

An Autopsy is planned for today.

Neighbors told Akron Police they hear about 10 gunshots close to 2 o'clock this morning.

Lieutenant Rick Edwards says a second man, 18-year old Chevron J. Mapp of Marcy Street in Akron, was shot in the arm during the altercation. He was treated and released from Akron General Medical Center and booked into the Summit County Jail. Mapp was charged with Murder and Aggravated Robbery.

Detectives have issued warrants for a second suspect, 18-year old Charles L. Williams, of Beechwood Drive. Williams is wanted for Murder and Felonious Assault. Charles Williams is a black male, 5’10”, 238 lbs., and has a short afro. Williams should be considered armed and dangerous.

Akron Police are looking for five suspects who they say are responsible for robbing a 22-year old man outside a car wash in the 15-hundred block of Frederick Boulevard around 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Akron Police Lieutenant Rick Edwards says the suspects took the victim's IPod, credit cards and drivers license. After the victim handed the suspect's his belongings, he took off running. As the victim was running, Police say a suspect took a shot at him, grazing his arm.

The victim refused hospital treatment.

Police describe the suspects as five black males, between the ages of 20-29, wearing dark clothing.

What's a young quarterback to do when he is locked out of his team's training facility and he wants to improve the offense?

That's what Browns quarterback Colt McCoy as a way to learn more about the West Coast Offense. McCoy traveled to Mississippi, Hattiesburg to be exact to visit with the former NFL signal caller.

“This summer I was just really trying to soak in as much information as I could and we were working hard having camps and things like that," said McCoy. "You can’t be around your coaches, so I just found a way to get a hold of Brett and was able to spend a couple days with him in Mississippi. He’s an outstanding guy, we had a blast and I learned a lot so I was thankful for him being open to me to even coming down there. That was the first time we met and it was a lot of fun.”

Did Favre help to slow down the high powered West Coast offense? “Well so far nothing has been easy," said McCoy.

"I will tell you that. There is a lot to learn and a lot to grow. I think he helped me a lot on some things. I had a list of questions and wasn’t able to ask my coach. I had the playbook and I had some tape, but if you can go down and ask him, ‘Okay versus this, what call do you make here? You see a pressure, can you make a call, can you adjust?’ Those are the things that we talked about, same questions that I would ask the coach. Now that I am here and I am getting coached every day, we are way passed that, but during that time Brett was very helpful,” said McCoy.

McCoy gets his second start of the pre-season Friday night against the Detroit Lions at Cleveland Browns Stadium.

The goal of the University of Akron Men's Soccer team this season is the same as last year's, win the NCAA National Championship.

This year, it's easier said than done.

The Zips return only four starters from last year's squad. Akron Head Coach Caleb Porter says 15 first-year players are on the roster this season, four transfers and 11 incoming freshmen.

Porter said he had anticipated losing only two starters from the National Championship team. Instead, the Zips lost seven starters, all to the MLS.

Porter says he will rely a lot on the four returning starters, forward Darren Mattocks, midfielder Scott Caldwell, defender Chad Barson and goalkeeper David Meves.

The Zips will have an inter-squad scrimmage tomorrow night at 7:30 at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field. On Saturday night, the Zips will have a pre-season match against Creighton in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Akron will open the 2011 regular season on Saturday August 27th against Cleveland State at FirstEnergy Stadium - Cub Cadet Field at 7:30 pm.

Ohio State interim coach Luke Fickell mayhave run his 10th practice yesterday, but he's still unsure who the starting running back will be for the season opener.

When asked if the position might be handled by committee for the September 3rd game against Akron, Fickell said, ``You never know.''

With senior incumbent Dan Herron (216 carries, 1,196 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2010) among four players serving a five-gamesuspension for NCAA rules violations, none of his replacements are blessed with experience.

Junior Jordan Hall (37-169-2), and sophomores Jaamal Berry (32-367-1) and Carlos Hyde (24-115) are in the mix, along with redshirt freshman Rod Smith.

The University of Akron men’s basketball team closed out its 2011 Canada trip with an 80-76 victory over defending Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) national champion Carleton University on Tuesday night.

Akron concluded its first foreign trip since 1999 with a perfect 5-0 record. The squad finished the trip averaging 87.2 ppg while holding five opponents to just 63.0 ppg (+24.2 ppg).

The Ravens, winners of seven of the last nine CIS national titles, gave the Zips their toughest battle of the trip, trailing Akron by one point with 1:03 left in the game. Akron pushed the lead back to four points (76-72) before a 3-pointer made it a one-point game (76-75) with 20 seconds on the clock. The Zips would ice the game at the free throw line, making four attempts over the final 12 seconds.

Sophomore guard Alex Abreu led the way with 15 points, eight assists and three steals. The eight-assist performance was his second of the trip (8, vs. Sheridan College). Junior forward Chauncey Gilliam and freshman forward Nick Harney chipped in with 12 points each while sophomore guard Brian Walsh had 11 points and freshman guard Demetrius Treadwell finished with 10 points.

Carleton’s Phillip Scrubb led all scorers with 27 points.

Gilliam led the Zips during Akron’s five-game trip, averaging 14.0 ppg while Harney averaged 11.5 ppg. Sophomore forward Josh Egner led the Zips on the glass, averaging 4.25 rpg.

Akron will take Wednesday off before returning to Akron on Thursday.

John Drennen broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 12th inning with a game-winning walk-off RBI single to give the Akron Aeros a 4-3 win in game one of a three-game series against the Harrisburg Senators Tuesday at Canal Park.

Left-handed pitcher Cory VanAllen allowed the Drennen double and suffered the loss for Harrisburg.

Right-handed pitcher Tyler Sturdevant recorded the win pitching two scoreless innings of relief and scattering one hit. Right-hander Steve Wright made the start for Akron and lasted 4.1 innings giving up three earned runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three.

The Aeros (64-58) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when John Drennen walked with the bases loaded.

Ben Copeland doubled home Jordan Henry in the bottom of the second inning to make it 2-0.

The Senators (68-54) cut the lead in half at 2-1 in the top of the third inning when Derek Norris hit a solo home run.

In the top of the fifth inning, Harrisburg took the lead. Josh Johnson opened the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a Wright wild pitch. He scored on an Erik Komatsu RBI double that tied the game 2-2. Later in the frame, Tyler Moore singled home Komatsu to give the Senators a 3-2 lead.

It remained 3-2 until the Aeros rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning. John Drennen led off with a single and, with one out, advanced to second on a Donnie Webb single. Kyle Bellows pinch hit for Cristo Arnal and singled home Drennen to tie the game 3-3 and force extra innings.

The game was tied until the 12th inning when Drennen singled home Copeland to give Akron the win.

The Aeros and Senators will continue their three-game series on Wednesday. Akron will give the ball to left-handed pitcher T.J. McFarland, who is 9-6 with a 3.75 ERA in 2011. He will face right-handed pitcher Tanner Roark, who is 7-8 with a 5.38 ERA this season.
