Indians Lose Season Finale To Tigers

Miguel Cabrera singled and doubled, wrapping up the American League batting title, and Jhonny Peralta hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 last night.

Cabrera finished the season hitting .344, six points ahead of Michael Young of Texas and Adrian Gonzalez of Boston.

Peralta hit his 21st homer of the season off Vinnie Pestano (1-2) to give the Tigers the lead after Ryan Perry (2-0) allowed Cleveland to tie it at 4 in the top of the eighth.

Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 49th save in 49 chances. Detroit will be at the New York Yankees to open the playoffs.

Cleveland reliever Vinnie Pestano allowed the home run to Peralta in the eighth. Indians Starter Zach McAllister pitched well for the first five-plus innings.

The Indians finish the season with a record of 80 wins and 82 losses, good for second place in the American League Central Division. The Tribe finishes 15 games behind the Tigers.

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has recalled RHP ZACH McALLISTER from the AAA Columbus Clippers.

McAllister, 23, spent most of the season at AAA Columbus where he went 12-3 w/a 3.32 ERA in 25 starts (3CG, 154.2IP, 155H, 57ER, 31BB, 128K, .261avg, 11HR). He finished the regular season tied for 3rd in the International League in wins (12), 4th in innings pitches (154.2) and 7th in both strikeouts (128) and ERA (3.32). On the year he limited right-handed hitters to a .241 (80-332) average against and a .223 (57-256) average with runners on base. He went at least 5.0IP in 23 of 25 AAA starts and also went 1-1 w/a 3.21 ERA in 2 IL playoff starts (14.0IP, 16H, 5R/ER). He made two Major League starts with Cleveland on July 7 and August 23 and posted a 12.27 ERA in those outings (7.1IP, 15H, 13R/10ER).

He wears #57 and will start tomorrow night, Tuesday, September 20 against the Chicago White Sox in Progressive Field.

The Indians Major League roster now consists of 34 players with 3 players on the Disabled List.
