AUDIO Walsh Jesuit Wins In The Rain

Walsh Jesuit’s Boys soccer team beat Woodridge and Mother Nature Monday afternoon, scoring an 8-0 win in a match played in a steady downpour at Walsh Jesuit High School.

The Warriors put three goals on the scoreboard in the first half and followed it up with five more in the second half.  Walsh improves their record to 4-5 on the season. Woodridge falls to 1-3-1.

Rain changes a soccer match, much like it changes the game of football.  The ball is heavy and passing has to be more direct.  Walsh was able to make the adjustment to the weather conditions.  The Bulldogs had their problems.

Walsh head coach John Kissner says he was able to learn a lot about his team during the game.  “The key thing was to get a workout, no injuries and it gets us ready for out next two games, Wednesday against Hoban (A North Coast League Game) and Saturday night against St. Vincent-St. Mary.

Junior Midfielder Ian Horning had the first Walsh Jesuit goal.  Freshman midfielder Brian Hughes and midfielder Dan Centa scored the next two goals to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, Centa added a second goal.  Sophomore forward Jordon Marich and freshman forward Mike Parianos each scored a pair of goals.

Kissner said “We worked on our team play tonight and on clearing up our weaknesses.”

The Warriors lost six senior starters from last year’s team.  One of the freshmen seeing playing time is freshmen midfielder P.J. Renz, who had two assists in the game.  Renz said he enjoyed playing in the rain.  “You get to slide tackle and stuff.  It was a good win for us.  It was our first shutout of the year.”

With five freshmen and four sophomores on the varsity team, the reloading process at Walsh Jesuit is underway.
