Jones was dominant for the Warriors' football team during its 35-0 regional quarterfinal win over West Geauga last Friday at Nordonia's Boliantz Stadium. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound back ran for 184 yards on 26 carries and tallied five touchdowns. His scoring jaunts were of 18, 3, 24, 8, and 19 yards.
“He had a great game and is really starting to get it,” veteran Walsh coach Gerry Rardin said. “He is picking his holes and being patient with each carry."
Jones became a running back in youth football and he has never stopped toting the ball.
“I’ve always wanted to carry the ball,” he said.
His emergence as one of the area's premier offensive players helped Walsh in earning a No. 1 seed in Division II, Region 5 and capturing the SportsInk.com Fab 15 poll championship.
“It is great being a back in this offense. Our line is tremendous,” Jones said.
Jones has lived in Shaker Heights and Macedonia as well as his current residence in Cuyahoga Falls. He has five siblings -- three sisters and two brothers.
“He's a hard working kid,” Rardin said. "He's just a very mannerful young man. He works his tail off. I can't say enough good things about him."
Jones had also been a defensive back for the Warriors earlier in the season, but now is strictly a catalyst for the Walsh offense.
“I’ve tried to pattern my style after LaDainian Tomlinson," he said. "He always runs hard and never comes off the field."
Jones is being recruited but has made no decision and said he wouldn't might heading south to continue his football career.
“The Carolinas would be great,” he said.
