Rain played a major factor on Monday as The University of Akron women’s golf team concluded day one of the Wild Eggs Cardinal Cup in an eighth-place tie at the par-72, 6,253-yard Cardinal Club Course.
Wet conditions slowed play all day, delaying the start to the first round and washing out the day’s planned second round. The tournament has been shortened from 54 to 36 holes, with the final round set to begin Tuesday morning.
The Zips carded a round of 23-over 311 while tournament-leader North Carolina State posted a score of 296 (+8). Akron is just six shots out of the top three (305).
Senior Kristen Hill led the way for the Zips, closing out the rain-soaked round in a tie for ninth place after carding a round of 3-over 75. Freshman Sara Johansson ended the day in a tie for 30th place thanks to a round of 78 (+6).
Seniors Katie Jenior and Amanda Butler are in a group that posted rounds of 79 (+7) and are tied for 39th place. Sophomore Sara Chaves rounded out the scoring five tied for 58th place with a score of 9-over 81.
Sophomore Whitney Graff, playing as an individual, is tied for 71st place with a score of 83 (+11).
The shortened tournament will conclude on Tuesday morning with a shotgun start to the final round.
