Astros Place Shortstop Jed Lowrie on DL Jared Wickerham/Getty Images(SAN FRANCISCO) -- One of the few bright spots for the Houston Astros this season has been the play of shortstop Jed Lowrie. Unfortunately for the team, Lowrie was placed on the disabled list after a collision at second base in Sunday's game agaisnt the San Francisco Giants.

Lowrie suffered a sprained and damaged nerve in his right leg.

In his first season with Houston, the 28-year old shortstop was batting .253 with 14 home runs and 36 runs batted in. Houston ranks just 23rd in Major League Baseball in runs scored.

If that wasn't bad enough, the team also placed catcher Jason Castro on the disabled list as well. Castro was batting .254 with two home runs. The team has activated shortstop Marwin Gonzalez from the DL and also called up catcher Carlos Corporan from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
