(CHARLESTON, S.C.) -- Serena Williams got her first victory on clay in four years on Sunday after a dominating 6-0, 6-1 performance over Lucie Safarova to win the Family Circle Cup.
It was Williams' 40th WTA title and first victory on clay since she captured the same title in 2008. Williams' was not expecting this type of performance in her first event of the season.
"I've never played, I can say, consistently at such a high level with low errors" the last two matches, said Williams who also defeated the world's fifth-ranked player, Samantha Stosur, in the semifinals on Saturday. "I really feel like, hopefully, I'll remember this so I can play like this more often."
Safarova saw a 107-mph ace come her way that wrapped it up for Williams.
"She was amazing," said Safarova, who fell to 0-5 against Williams. "She deserves to be the champion."
