ODNR: Keep Boating Safety A Priority

Many people will be out boating as the 4th of July holiday approaches.

John Wisse, Public Information Officer for the ODNR Division of Watercraft said that there are three key elements to safe boating.

"The best way to do that is to wear a life jacket, keep a proper lookout, and to stay sober while boating," Wisse says.

Alcohol is, unfortunately one of the major factors when it comes to accidents and fatalities on the water.

"Alcohol and boating do not mix," so people need to remember that when they're out on the water."

Wisse says a higher amount of enforcement will be out on the water due to the fact that this one of the busiest times of the Ohio boating season.

"Our goal is to remain vigilant and to make sure that we get the impaired boater off the waterway."

He says the Division of Watercraft will be out looking for impaired boaters in an effort to keep people safe.

Wisse says by knowing Ohio's boating laws and saftey before leaving the dock is helpful in terms of a safe boating experience.

"By knowing what these safety tips are and keeping safety a priority, you can be assured of having a safe boating experience this season."
