The Cleveland Browns today signed running back Chris Ogbonnaya (O-BONN-I-ah) to the active roster from Houston’s practice squad. In addition, the club waived running back Armond Smith.
Ogbonnaya has appeared in four career games with 14 rushing attempts for 56 yards and one reception for 19 yards. This season, he has totaled three carries for six yards, while appearing in two games with the Texans. Originally drafted by St. Louis in the seventh round (211th overall) of the 2009 draft, Ogbonnaya spent the first 11 weeks of his rookie season on the Rams’ practice squad before appearing in two contests, where he rushed for 50 yards on 11 carries and added one reception for 19 yards. After being waived at the end of training camp the next year, he spent the entire 2010 season and four weeks of the 2011 season on the Texans’ practice squad.
He was a four-year letterman at the University of Texas (2005-08), appearing in 47 games. He rushed for 597 yards on 140 carries and eight touchdowns, while adding 75 receptions for 792 yards with three touchdowns. A native of Houston, Texas, the 6-0, 225-pound Ogbonnaya attended Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School in Houston. He was born on May 20, 1986.
Ogbonnaya will wear No. 25.
