Dozens Feared Dead in Northern Afghanistan EarthquakeiStockphoto/Thinkstock(KABUL, Afghanistan) -- As many as 100 people are feared dead after an 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Monday.
Local officials say that at least two dozen homes collapsed in the Burka district of Baghlan province as rescuers dug frantically with primitive equipment to try and find survivors.
Lesser damage was reported in nearby Takhar and Badakhshan provinces, where the earthquake was also felt.
The governor of Baglan province said that a delegation was dispatched to the scene to determine the extent of the destruction.
However, lack of phone communication is hampering rescue efforts.  An inspection team is expected to update the Afghan government at some point Tuesday.
