Pope Benedict Condemns Violence in MexicoCarlos Alvarez/Getty Image(MEXICO CITY, MEXICO) -- Pope Benedict XVI was greeted by supporters upon his arrival in Mexico on Friday.
The Pope condemned the violence that has plagued the country resulting in thousands of deaths. In speaking to reporters, the 84-year-old pontiff said the violence is destroying the young.
"We all know about the beautiful things of Mexico, but we also know about the great problems with drug lords and violence. It is certainly a great responsibly for the Catholic church in a country that is 80 percent Catholic. We must do the most we can to fight this destructive evil of humanity and our youth," he said.
Pope Benedict also spoke about Cuba, which he will also visit, saying the church is ready to assist the country in moving forward.
