COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- An official with President Barack Obama's Ohio campaign has resigned his chairmanship of the Franklin County Democratic Party.

Greg Schultz said he's stepping down to focus full-time on the Obama campaign. He is its Ohio state director.

The Columbus Dispatch ( http://bit.ly/Nch0Na ) reports the move comes as the county Board of Elections and the Secretary of State's office look into payments made to a Democratic fundraiser. The Dispatch has reported that payments totaling $20,500 for undocumented work were made to Melissa Barnhart, who said the money was for previous work done on Columbus City Council races.

A message seeking comment was sent Friday to the Ohio Obama campaign.

Veteran Democratic campaign consultant Greg Haas plans to seek the county chairmanship. He says he doesn't see any wrongdoing in the payment situation.
