BROOKFIELD, N.Y. (AP) -- A central New York native in charge of U.S. Coast Guard operations from the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River has received a promotion.

Michael Parks was promoted from the rank known in the Navy and Coast Guard as rear admiral lower half to rear admiral upper half during a ceremony held Sunday in Cleveland, headquarters of the 9th Coast Guard District.

Parks is a native of Brookfield in Madison County. He assumed command of the 9th District in April 2010. With the promotion, he's now a two-star rear admiral.

The 9th Coast Guard District spans the five Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway and other waterways in surrounding states, including 1,500 miles along the U.S. border with Canada.

Parks is the married father of two daughters.
