COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Police say a man was fatally shot by SWAT officers after a domestic dispute at a Columbus home turned into a hostage situation.

Sgt. Rich Weiner (WY'-ner) says officers responding to a domestic violence call Tuesday discovered 28-year-old Kevin Boozer yelling outside of his parents' home.

Weiner says as officers approached, Boozer shoved a woman into the house, went inside and locked the door. He says officers heard breaking glass and other commotion inside, including a woman pleading for mercy.

Weiner says a SWAT team arrived, entered the home and found Boozer holding a knife to the woman's throat. That's when officers opened fire, hitting Boozer.

Weiner says the woman had been beaten. Boozer's relatives identified her as his girlfriend. They told investigators that Boozer was high on bath salts at the time, which Weiner says police haven't confirmed.
