Police chief succeeds Ohio sheriff who resigned

DELAWARE, Ohio (AP) -- A city police chief has been chosen to replace a central Ohio sheriff who resigned following allegations that he misused funds during a training trip to the FBI Academy last summer.

Delaware County Republican leaders have appointed Delaware Police Chief Russell Martin as sheriff. The 54-year-old Martin is expected to start his new role before June, and he'll run for the office in the November election.

Another officer had filled the role since Sheriff Walter Davis III resigned in early April. At the time, Davis said he would reimburse the county for any money in question and took responsibility for his actions.
