Ohio 'Take Back' collects 13 tons of prescriptions

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Attorney General Mike DeWine says Ohioans turned in more than 13 tons of unwanted prescription drugs during events nationwide to help people safely dispose of such medications.

The national prescription drug "Take Back" days held twice each year encourage people to dispose of unwanted, unused and expired pills at designated locations. DeWine says last Saturday's collections at dozens of sites around the state totaled more than 26,200 pounds of prescription medications.

The theme of "Take Back" days fits with the state's effort to fight addiction and overdose deaths. Ohio has battled soaring rates of prescription painkiller addictions and overdoses for several years.
