SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) -- Two ferries that deliver tourists and supplies to a Canadian island in Lake Erie have been shut down for weeks and might stay that way for a while.

Pelee (PEE'-lee) Island's mayor says the lack of ferry service is sinking the island's economy.

Right now the only way to get to the island between Cleveland and Detroit is by small plane.

Two ferries make regular trips to the island. One travels from southern Ontario, Canada, and the other from Sandusky, Ohio. But both are out service for repairs for at least 10 more days.

One bed and breakfast owner told the Sandusky Register that she can't get supplies to the island and that it's hard to take reservations because they don't know when the ferry is going to run again.
