BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Call center operator Convergys Corp. says it will close its Baton Rouge center in May, affecting at least 300 employees.

Convergys spokeswoman Amy Williams said Tuesday that the closure is due to a reduction in call volumes of companies serviced by the center.

The Cincinnati-based company said it is attempting to place some workers in work-at-home positions. Convergys said employees may be eligible for openings at other call centers in its system, although the company does not have any other centers in Louisiana.

The center opened in October 1999 and, at one time, employed about 1,000.

Currently, the company lists 68 call centers and other facilities in the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
