The number of officers shot is still unclear, with some reports saying one to three officers shot and at least two reports saying three or more.
The shooting occurred in Greenland, outside Portsmouth, N.H., on the sea coast.
The incident may have been the result of a drug bust gone awry, according to reports.
The shootout is the latest in the rising number of officers who have been shot by suspects, a trend that counters a decline in many crimes in many areas of the country.
