On Wednesday afternoon, the Firestone Falcons won the City Series Golf Championship at Mud Run Golf Course, defeating Ellet by 21 strokes in the five team tournament.
Firestone had a four-person total of 301. Ellet was second at 322. Kenmore finished third, East was fourth and North was fifth.
Firestone Golf Course Dave Milo says he has 'good kids. They're at the range every day. They're hitting balls every day. Even if I call off practice, I know they're going to be hitting balls and it shows in their scores'.
The medalist of the City Series Championship was Firestone Junior Phillip Martin, who shot a one-under 67 at Mud Run. (33-34). Milo says 'what's great about Phillip is that he's getting better. He has the ability to play D-One Golf if he wants to'.
It's the second consecutive year that Martin has won medalist honors. Martin said 'I didn't do anything well. I just minimized my mistakes. I was just solid overall'. Martin had four birdies and three bogeys in his round.
Patrick Schultz shot 76 and Matt McCans had a 78 for Firestone. Low golfer for Ellet was Ben Cockerham with a 74.
Next up for the City Series Golf Teams is the Ohio High School Sectional Golf Tournament.
Luke Holmes scored a goal and added an assist in his Zips' debut as The No. 4 University of Akron men's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Ohio State in front of a record crowd of 5,819 fans Wednesday night at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
It was a commanding performance overall for UA (6-0-2), which extended its NCAA-record home unbeaten streak to 43 matches before an electric crowd that featured 2,855 students alone. The Zips, who dominated possession throughout the majority of the contest, out-shot the Buckeyes 15-5 overall and 7-2 on frame.
Akron found itself having to break down an entrentched OSU defense for much of the match but was patient with its attack and the goals eventually came.
After nearly scoring on a corner kick just minutes earlier, UA broke through in a flash at the 20:59 mark thanks to a deep run by DeAndre Yedlin. The true freshman split a pair of defenders on the right flank and slipped the ball past the keeper from a near impossible angle and off the far post for his first goal of the year.
The score remained 1-0 in Akron's favor at halftime. The Zips' possession and swarming defense limited Ohio State to just two shots in the first 45 minutes. Meanwhile, UA sophomore Darren Mattocks was causing all kinds of trouble with four shots of his own, including two on frame, in a busy opening period.
The Buckeyes (5-4-1), who had relied almost exclusively on set pieces and counter attacks for much of the game, began to press midway through the second half and had their best scoring opportunity thwarted when Yedlin came off the line to clear a shot by Parnell Hegngi in the 67th minute.
Thomas Schmitt made OSU pay for the missed opportunity with his first goal of the season in the 69th minute by cleaning up a rebounded shot from Holmes, who initiated the action with a deep run down the left side of the field.
The Buckeyes did not go down without a fight, however, and got the goal back when Sebastian Revas slotted a shot off a long pass from Omar Vallejo in the 74th minute.
But Holmes, the 2010 NAIA National Player of the Year, put the game away for good with his first goal in an Akron uniform in the 82nd minute. Freshman Wil Trapp found the Notre Dame College transfer with space on the left flank with a pass from just past midfield. Holmes shook his defender and fired a rocket off the crossbar and into the back of the net.
Akron will next open Mid-American Conference play this Saturday when it travels to Western Michigan to take on the Broncos. Kick off is scheduled for 1 p.m. (ET)
Zips Notebook: Akron, which was one of just eight unbeaten teams in the country entering the week, has now gone undefeated in its last 17 games – dating back to the end of last season ... UA improved to 4-0-1 against Ohio State since 2008 and 15-4-5 against schools from the Big Ten Conference under sixth-year head coach Caleb Porter ... Akron is now 25-6-3 all-time against their in-state rivals ... Wednesday's victory was the 96th in Porter's head coaching career.
Miguel Cabrera singled and doubled, wrapping up the American League batting title, and Jhonny Peralta hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4 last night.
Cabrera finished the season hitting .344, six points ahead of Michael Young of Texas and Adrian Gonzalez of Boston.
Peralta hit his 21st homer of the season off Vinnie Pestano (1-2) to give the Tigers the lead after Ryan Perry (2-0) allowed Cleveland to tie it at 4 in the top of the eighth.
Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 49th save in 49 chances. Detroit will be at the New York Yankees to open the playoffs.
Cleveland reliever Vinnie Pestano allowed the home run to Peralta in the eighth. Indians Starter Zach McAllister pitched well for the first five-plus innings.
The Indians finish the season with a record of 80 wins and 82 losses, good for second place in the American League Central Division. The Tribe finishes 15 games behind the Tigers.
Akron Police investigating claims made by an 11-year old Hyre Middle School student that he was approached yesterday morning by a man who asked him to get inside a car and help him search for a missing dog.
Police say the youngster told school officials of the incident when he came to Hyre Middle School Wednesday morning.
Police say the boy was near the corner of Canton Road and Wedgewood when the man stopped his car, began talking and asked him to get in and search for the dog.
Authorities describe the man as an African-American, about 50 years old, bald with a salt-and-pepper beard and a moustache.
Akron Police say the man was driving a grey sedan, possibly a Dodge Intrepid.

University of Akron head football Rob Ianello admits that his team had a 'jump' in their step when they resumed practice earlier this week.
That 'jump' followed their 36-13 victory over VMI Saturday at InfoCision Stadium.
This coming Saturday, the Zips jump back into Mid-American Conference play at Eastern Michigan.
With eight games remaining in the season, Ianello hopes that his players look forward to the remainder of this season and not the 2012 campaign.
Akron has been getting solid offensive production from two players, running back Jawon Chisolm and wide receiver Keith Sconiers. Chisolm ran for 188 yards and one touchdown in the VMI win. Sconiers caught 8 passes for `54 yards and two touchdowns.
Eastern Michigan has victories over Howard and Alabama State this season and losses to Michigan and Penn State.
The Walsh Jesuit Warriors have through the first half of the High School Football season with a record of 3-1.
This week, the Warriors are on the road, not to another high school in Northeast Ohio, but to Buffalo, New York to take on Canisius High School Saturday afternoon.
In the most recent Ohio HIgh School Athletic Asssociation Computer Ratings, Walsh Jesuit is rated number 5 in Division Two, Region Five.
Following Saturday afternoon's game, the road gets tougher for Walsh Jesuit as they will take on arch-rival Hoban at Dowed Stadium on Friday October 7th. The following week, the Warriors will play Benedictine at Walsh Jesuit High School on Friday October 14th.
Warriors head coach Gerry Rardin says his team has fared very well in playing close games against their opponents.
The Warriors will close out the regular season of their high school football season against Padua Franciscan and NDCL.
Long before the season started, a lot of people said they would hold off judgment on Ohio State until after the first five games.
That means a lot is riding on Saturday's Big Ten opener against Michigan State.
Suspensions, injuries, departures, a lack of depth and integrating in several freshmen have all added up to a mixed bag for the Buckeyes (3-1). To knock off a talented Spartans (3-1) team would mean they're headed in the right direction.
Interim coach Luke Fickell is pleased with where his team is so far, but also realizes that it has a lot of work to do.
A setback this week at Ohio Stadium could mean trouble for a fragile team heading into a tornado of a four-game set to open conference play.
Following the Michigan State game, Ohio State travels to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers. Then Ohio State is on the road at Illinois and home to Wisconsin.

Wilson Betemit hit a 423-foot home run in hisfirst game back from left knee soreness, and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Indians 9-6 last night.
Betemit hadn't played since September 16th, and manager Jim Leyland said Monday he was concerned about the third baseman. But Betemit was in the lineup yesterday, and he gave AL Central champion Detroit a 4-0 lead in the second inning with the toweringhomer to right field.
Detroit's Max Scherzer (15-9) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2-3 innings, striking out seven in his final tuneup for the postseason.
Jose Valverde pitched the ninth, earning his 48th save in as many chances.
Jeanmar Gomez (5-3) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in 4 2-3 innings. He had won his previous five starts.
Jim Thome and Lonnie Chisenhall had two hits apiece for the Tribe.
The teams complete the regular season tonight in Detroit. Zach McAllister will pitch for the Indians tonight against Rick Porcello for the Tigers.

Cleveland outfielder Grady Sizemore is expected to travel to Vail, Colorado, for a Monday consultation on his injured right knee.
Sizemore has played only 71 games this season after appearing in 33 in 2010. He opened this season on the DL as he recovered from surgery on his left knee in May of 2010.
He then hurt his right knee and sustained a hernia on the same play while sliding into abase this May. Sizemore also underwent abdominal surgery July 21st.
Cleveland Indians Trainer Lonnie Soloff says Sizemore is going to get another opinion on the best possible course of action to deal with the troublesome right knee.
The Indians have a $9 million option they can pick up to keep Sizemore next season, or they can let him become a free agent.
Sizemore finishes the 2011 season with a .224 batting average with 10 home runs and 32 runs batted in.
