School will let out early this year for Wadsworth students as the district begins construction on a new high school and three elementary schools.

"We had some other schools come in and buy some used furniture and used equipment," said Fortner. "We will also have some auctions coming in May for the public if they would like to come in and buy any school furnishings and materials that we are not taking to our new building."

List of scheduled auction dates:

  • May 22 – Isham Elementary
  • May 24 – Wadsworth High School

Superintendent Dale Fortner Talks With WAKR's Ray Horner by Amani Abraham

Fortner said students and staff can look forward to a number of new materials and teaching supplies inside each classroom

"The strongest or the most prominent thing from an instructional standpoint is interactive white boards in every classroom," said Fortner. "It's an exciting time. It's an opportunity for our teachers and our students to be on the cutting-edge of some of the new changes that are happening in education."

This is the final week of classes for students in the school district. Students are scheduled to return to school in the fall on September 6th.

Wadsworth School Officials Make Their Case

Some students in Wadsworth might have to find alternative transportation of voters don't approve an operating levy.

The school district is asking for passage of a 4.9-mill levy in November, down from the failed 5.9-mill attempt in August.

Superintendent Dale Fortner says the money would keep the district afloat, but not much more than that.

"No, we're not out of the woods," said Fortner.  "We're trying to pass the levy in order to maintain what we have and we've made several reductions in services over the last couple of years."

Failure would likely mean a reduction in busing that would start in January, according to Fortner.  He says there's not much else that can be cut in the middle of a school year.  It would, however, be a different story beyond that.  Fortner says the budget would have to be reduced the following fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2012.

He says it's important the levy be approved now because waiting until 2012 would result in no additional money for the district until 2013.

Fortner took questions from callers on the WAKR Ray Horner Morning Show this morning, telling them that programs such as all day, every day Kindergarten would remain intact with levy approval.  He also says pay-to-participate will remain, but fees would likely be higher if the stream of revenue remains stagnant.
