This could be a busy weekend for firefighters.
Akron Fire Capt. Al Bragg says firefighters across the state responded to about 80 fires per day from December 24 through December 26 last year.
The cause?
"We need to make sure that we never leave our cooking unattended - it is the number one cause of fire and those fires injure more people than any other type fire and kill the second most number of people," said Bragg.
Bragg says live Christmas trees are always a fire hazard, but he says that's about all they are after two weeks, despite whatever the tree farmer said about how they last several weeks.
"Unfortunately, some people have put up trees right after Thanksgiving, so now we're beyond that two week period and those trees are very dangerous," said Bragg.
Bragg also recommends using a "three feet rule," not allowing any source of fire, including a fireplace, lit candle or space heater, within three feet of anything flammable, including the tree and gifts/gift wrap.
