The membership of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has elected L. Patricia Simmons, President and CEO of the Akron Zoo, to the position of Chair of the Board of Directors at their annual meeting in Atlanta.
“Pat Simmons is recognized by her peers as an outstanding leader in the zoo and aquarium profession,” said AZA President and CEO Jim Maddy. “AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums will benefit from Pat’s extensive experience, her thoughtful approach, and her deep commitment to the mission of the Association.”
Simmons will serve as Chair of the Board of the AZA Board of Directors for a one-year term beginning October 1, 2011. As Chair, Simmons will be involved in every aspect of the national organization, including accreditation, ethics, professional development, conservation education, government affairs, and wildlife conservation.
Simmons began her career at the Akron Zoo as the Director of Development and Administration in 1983. In 1985 she was named President & CEO. Simmons has been a professional fellow member of the AZA since 1985. She has served on the AZA Boards of Directors, as Chair to the Board of Regents, Chair of the Conference Program Committee and Chair of the Conference Site Selection Committee.
“I am honored to be elected to this position and help lead the Association,” commented Simmons. “I feel privileged to represent the Akron Zoo and our community on a national level and look forward to working with my colleagues at AZA zoos & aquariums.”
