One Ohio woman is riding a wave of success after winning in the USASA National Championship earlier this month in Colorado.

Kent State University sophomore Angie Crum says before she took the podium, there were a few tense moments before the big announcement.

"We were standing there and we heard the guy say 'Your 2012 USASA Overall National Champion from Snow Ohio region' and my mom and I screamed and jumped up and then I ran up there, so it was very exciting."

The 19-year-old won the overall  National Championship in the Woman's "Jams"  18-22 age group after qualifying and competing in all five events, which include slope style, boardercross, slalom, giant slalom, and half pipe.

The half pipe was the most challenging event for Crum, who says her Colorado competition had the upper hand.

"There is no half-pipes in Ohio, and I expected the girls in that competition to be a lot better and I exceeded my own expectations," Crum said.

Angie says her time with the Kent Ski & Snowboard Team gave her the idea to compete against some of the best names in snowboarding.

"I decided i really liked it and and ended up leaving the Kent Ski & Snowboard Team and joined the the USASA (United States Snowboard Association)."

Crum said during the winter, she practiced at Brandywine to hone her craft, going after class to practice on her snowboarding.

The Revere High School graduate has done well in other competitions, taking the second place silver medal at the Nature Valley NASTAR Nationals.

Now that the snowboarding season has come to an end, Crum says her next goal is to try and line up some sponsors in hopes of competing professionally.

"My plan is to get myself out there and get some sponsorships during the offseason," she says.

"It's a pretty expensive sport, and going to college, it's tough to always afford to be going to these competitions, and I want to be doing this for a long time."

For the summer, Angie plans on working at the High Cascade Snowboarding Camp in Mount Hood, Oregon.

"They have snow all year round and I can practice in addition to making some extra money."

The USASA National is the nations biggest amateur snowboarding event featuring over 1,700 participants.
