About a dozen families got an update Thursday on the progress of the Akron Public Schools Firestone/Litchfield Community Learning Center project.
Project manager John Peterson of GPD Group showed a more detailed look at the combined school's future in the presentation at Firestone's current cafeteria.
"We're showing a lot more detailed floor plans, than what we had shown previously," Peterson tells AkronNewsNow.com. "Previously, this had kind of blocks of spaces, now we have all the individual spaces accounted for...where they are in the building, where they're adjacent to."
Peterson says the adjustments are an ongoing process, and already, some tweaks such as adding an additional science lab have been made.
"Science, special education, and just little things like staff restrooms," Peterson says. "Locating the proportions of the spaces, redistribution of the spaces, those sorts of things."
Lisa Bryson's daughter will be a senior next year...she's glad the district went the direction it did.
"I'm glad that we're building new," Bryson tells AkronNewsNow.com. "I know a lot of people were kind of hesitant about it at first because of the cost and stuff. But I think that we just need a little bit more space, and I think the classrooms are going to be better for the kids, and the interest areas."
But she and others are worried about increased traffic and noise issues.
"Well, I just think there's going to be a lot more traffic because the construction trucks will be dumping stuff and they'll be leaving and just going back and forth," Bryson says. "And the traffic, I'm just worried because the railroad tracks will be close to where the traffic is going to be."
Others are concerned about construction affecting Firestone students, who will remain on campus. Peterson says there should be minimal disruptions.
Litchfield students will spend the next three school years in the old Perkins school, before students in both schools return to the new building in the fall of 2015.
