Students at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School are making vibrant and elaborate easter eggs with the combination of fire, wax and a unique Ukrainian tradition.

Jennifer Philip, a Russian language teacher at St. Vincent-St. Mary, wanted to give a lesson on the unique wax-resistance method to decorate eggs known as Pysanky.

“It is an art form,” said Philip. “...it’s the meaning behind, the symbolism, the patience that goes behind it too.”

The students are given a tool used to put the wax onto the egg, then they dip the egg into a colored dye and repeat the process until they achieve their desired look.

Once the egg has dried, another tool is used to extract the raw egg from inside the shell.

This is the second year the students have had a chance to use the wax-resistant method for their easter eggs.

The lesson jumpstarts a journey for Phillips and several of her students as they take a class trip to Russia this Easter weekend with the first stop at Moscow.

“We want (the students) to be their whole self and find themselves. For me, being someone who really loves Russian culture and Slovak culture, I just want to impart a little of my passion onto them.”
