Life In Prison For Akron Killer

A 22-year old Akron man is handed a life prison sentence for the murder of a local soldier and the robbery of another man.

Summit County Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands sentenced Chad Stephens, 22, of Baird Street in Akron, to life in prison for the Murder of Kim Slayko . A jury found Stephens guilty of Murder and two counts of Aggravated Robbery, on May 15.

On August 23, Stephens set up a meeting to sell Opana, a painkiller, to a man he met at an Akron gas station. When the victim arrived at the meeting spot, he was robbed at gunpoint of several hundred dollars by an accomplice of Stephens. The following week, on August 31, Stephens arranged to meet and sell Opana to the victim, Kim Slayko. Stephens failed to show up. When Slayko called him to see where he was, Stephens claimed he wanted to make sure Slayko was not a police officer and then set up a second meeting spot. When Slayko arrived at the next meeting, he was jumped by two men who attempted to rob him. He called Stephens and set up a third meeting spot, this time on Baughman Avenue in Akron. When Slayko arrived and met Stephens, Slayko went behind a house, where he was shot and killed.

Kim Slayko had served tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Chad Stephens will be eligible for parole after serving 23 years in prison.

A jury has convicted a 22-year old Akron man of murder and aggravated robbery for the shooting death of another man.

Last August Chad Stephens,of Baird Street, shot and killed 33-year old Kim Slayko after Slayko had agreed to meet Stephens to arrange the purchase of a pain-killer. Slayko was shot behind a house on Baughman Street. Earlier that day two men had attempted to rob Slayko, after Stephens had set up an earlier meeting with him, and Stephens failed to show.

Slayko, a Ravenna native, was a U.S. Army veteran who had served in Afghanistan.

Summit County Judge Mary Margaret Rowlands will sentence Stephens May 30th.

Akron Murder Trial Underway

An Akron man is on trial in Summit County Common Pleas Court this week charged with murder in the shooting death of a Cuyahoga Falls man.

The Falls News Press reports 22-year old Chad Allen Stephens is on trial for the August 31st 2011 shooting death of 33-year old Kim Slayko II . Stephens is charged with murder with a firearm specification, aggravated robbery, and having weapons under disability.


Opening arguments were made by the prosecution and the defense, and the first witness took the stand.
Slayko, a Ravenna native, was a U.S. Army veteran who had served in Afghanistan.

Akron Murder Suspect Caught

Akron police have have charged a 22-year-old man with the murder of a Cuyahoga Falls resident.

Officers arrested Chad Stephens of Akron for the murder of 33-year-old Kim Slayko who was found in the 900 block of Baughman Street on Wednesday afternoon.

Along with the Akron Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Office Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Fairlawn Police Department helped in the arrest of Stephens.

Slayko died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

He was taken to Akron General Hospital where he later died.
