Very little is known about an alleged sexual assault of an Akron Public Schools student.

But we do know that the reported incidents, which were brought to police and the district's attention by Akron Children's Hospital on Wednesday, apparently didn't happen on school property.

"From what I understand early on, this did not happen on school grounds. This was not in a building, it was not on the property of the school system," district spokesman Mark Williamson tells AkronNewsNow.com. "However, that doesn't mean it's not a concern of ours. If students are involved, then we're always concerned."

And Williamson said school superintendent David James had strong words if these allegations bear fruit.

"If this is true, this is truly reprehensible," Williamson says. "This is not the kind of thing that we want happening with our students."

Akron police and the district are looking into the allegations, and are helping the alleged victim.

Williamson says it's still very early in the process, and officials are not saying much more out of caution...as information is still being gathered.

"Get to the truth," Williamson says. "We need to get to the truth to find out exactly what did happen."

There's no word yet what school the victim attends, or of their age or gender.

(Earlier ANN coverage) The city of Akron and the Akron Public Schools are looking into alleged sexual assaults of a young victim.

The city says Akron police detectives were notified of reported incidents by authorities at Akron Children's Hospital on Wednesday, and police and the district are investigating.

A city statement says police are also working with the victim's family to make sure their needs are being addressed.

The statement does not give the victim's age or gender, and does not name which school may be involved.

Juvenile Believed to be Victim of Sexual Assault

Akron, Ohio (March 14, 2013) - Mayor Don Plusquellic and Akron Public School Superintendent David James became aware today of incidents that involve a juvenile victim of alleged sexual assaults. Yesterday, police detectives were notified by authorities at Akron Children’s Hospital of the incidents involving the juvenile victim, and the detectives responded immediately. Police and APS personnel are actively investigating the incidents: statements are being gathered, evidence is being collected, and any videotapes reviewed. The police are also working with the victim’s family to make sure the victim’s needs are being addressed.

“We are taking these allegations seriously and want to protect the victim. We will do everything we can to find out what happened and take appropriate action after a thorough and complete investigation,” said Mayor Don Plusquellic.
“We still have very few confirmed facts, but I want to assure everyone that our staff is working---right now---with Akron police to get to the bottom of this. If the allegations are true, my heart goes out to the victim and the victim's family. This is truly reprehensible behavior," said Akron Public School Superintendent David W. James.

The Summit County Medical Examiner and the Akron Police Department are investigating a fatal traffic crash. A two car crash around 7:45 this morning on West Bath Road killed 77-year old Wayne Jones of Cuyahoga Falls.

Jones was transported by EMS to Akron City Hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are under investigation at this time.

Two men armed with guns broke into an Akron home Thursday night and robbed the woman inside.

Police Lieutenant Rick Edwards says the suspects broke into the home in the 300 block of East Archwood Avenue shortly after 7PM.

They entered through an unlocked kitchen window, and and approached the 65-year-old woman in her bedroom, where she was watching TV.

The suspects demanded marijuana and money, but instead left with $200 and a laptop computer. They also took her cell phone so she could not call for help.

The woman was not injured.

Police describe the suspects as two black males, between 20 and 26 years old, each wearing dark clothing and hooded sweatshirts.

The U.S. Marshals Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force is offering a reward leading to the arrest of a man wanted in connection with a nightclub shooting last July.

22-year old Dontay Antonio Taylor with a last known address on Eva Avenue in Akron is wanted for allegedly murdering 38-year old Rahsaan Price and injuring 28-year old Lamar Fitzgerald and 25-year old Deanna May at the Embassy Lounge on Romig Road July 23.

Police say the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. after Taylor was refused entry into the lounge. He allegedly fired several shots through the windows, killing Price while he was DJ'ing at the nightclub.

Taylor is a black man standing  5’09” and weighs 145 lbs. He is considered to be armed and dangerous.

Back and forth reaction continues over the Ohio Supreme Court suit by six Akron police captains, trying to overturn the appointment of assistant police chief Charles Brown by Mayor Don Plusquellic.

Akron Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 7 president Paul Hlynsky, appearing on the WAKR Ray Horner Morning Show on Friday, says the mayor "stepped all over the charter" by appointing Brown.

He says the union has a problem with the appointment whether Brown is a sworn peace officer or not. Mayor Plusquellic's office says that Brown is a sworn reserve officer.

"If they're saying that Charlie Brown is a civilian, then they're taking away our bargaining unit work on the labor side of law," Hlynsky told WAKR's Ray Horner. "If they're saying he's a sworn police officer, then they've violated civil service rules and basically circumvented the entire promotions process."

Hlynsky says the Akron captains were not offered a chance at the job.

Mayor Plusquellic's spokesperson, Stephanie York, says the mayor can appoint his own assistants.

"The mayor, as Safety Director for both the police and fire divisions, is in charge of the police division," York tells AkronNewsNow.com. "And he has the right to appoint any assistant he wants in order to help him administer the police division."

York says though Brown is a sworn officer, it's still standard practice for officers report to civilian leaders.

"At every level of government in the United States, safety forces report to civilians," York says. "In charge of the military is the president of the United States. In charge of Akron's police division is the mayor."

Hlynsky says those leaders don't "mingle" in the chain of command.

Hlynsky says Mayor Plusquellic "doesn't like cops, he doesn't like their authority and he doesn't like the fact that they're not afraid of him".

A Maple Heights man just thought he was helping a woman move out of her apartment on Wednesday, but instead ended up in a fight and was shot.

Akron Police say it happened in the 2500 block of Romig Road around 1PM. 21-year-old Willie Brown was helping the woman move out of the apartment, when the female's boyfriend and another man showed up.

Browns and the boyfriend's friend got into a fight, and eventually Brown was shot in the right arm.

He was taken to Akron General Medical Center, where his injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The suspect has a tear-drop tattoo near his right eye. He is also described as a man in his 40's, and was wearing a red sweat suit at the time of the altercation.

The suspect remains at large.

Akron Police are seeking the public's help in trying to locate a man said to be responsible for robbing a pizza shop at gunpoint on East Avenue

The APD released a video showing a masked gunman entering the Little Caesars on East Avenue around 10 p.m. Feb 3.

Once inside, he walked behind a counter and pointed a handgun at two workers, demanding money from the pizza shop's safe, the workers themselves, as well as cash from the register.

The man took off with an unreported amount of money and ran out of the rear door.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact the Akron Police Department.

Detectives are investigating a shooting that occurred around 11:00pm Monday night near the intersection of Garth Avenue and Madison Avenue on the city's west side.

Akron Police are saying 21-year old Celena White of Palmetto Avenue was allegedly shot by another passenger while riding in a 1997 Chevy van.

White was being transported to Akron General Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

Police don't have much detail on the incident, but the shooting remains under investigation.

A teenager is behind bars today, charged with pulling the trigger in a fatal shooting.

19-year-old Bryan Giles is charged with Aggravated Murder for the incident on Madison Avenue Tuesday afternoon that left 27-year-old Jarrell Cunningham dead and 20-year-old Terrell Patterson injured.

Patterson remains in critical condition at Akron General Medical Center.

One Akron mother was arrested after police say she was hostile towards officers following the arrest of her 19-year-old son.

40-year-old Sarina Lawrence is facing charges of obstructing  official business and misconduct at an emergency. She was being held at the Summit County Jail. Summit County Sheriff's officials say she was released around 1 a.m. Thursday morning.

Carr is currently being held at the jail.

Police say Lawrence's son, 19-year-old Ragheem Carr and two teen boys, ages 16 and 13 allegedly robbed a 28-year-old man at a bus stop near Lovers Lane and Inman Street around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The man told police he was robbed of $30, his iPhone, a silver chain, and three bus passes.

Police arrested Carr and the 13-year old. The 16-year old was not taken into custody and now has a warrant for aggravated robbery in connection with the incident.

Akron Police say while Carr was being held inside a police cruiser , his mother tried to approach the vehicle. She was told by officers to move away from the cruiser, prompting her to continue yelling at police and told her son, “Don’t you talk to the [expletive] cops," according to police.
