CANTON, Ohio (AP) -- A city leader in northeastern Ohio has proposed putting traffic cameras on school buses to catch drivers who pass buses stopped to pick up or drop off students.

The idea is being pitched by Canton City Councilman Thomas West.

It's a fallback position because he doesn't have enough support to install curbside traffic cameras at busy intersections and school zones. He's also uncertain about support for the bus camera proposal, which would require school board backing.

According to The (Canton) Repository (bit.ly/YLin7k), school transportation director Connie Dickon sees a growing problem of drivers passing buses.

By law, motorists cannot pass a school bus in either lane of a two-lane road when it is stopped to pick up or drop off students.

Dickon says most offending drivers don't get caught.
