An American baking icon is closing up shop, and with Hostess planning to liquidate, following an unending strike by workers, a lot of familiar products will disappear at least for now from grocery and convenience store shelves. Twinkies Suzy Q's, Donettes, Dolly Madison, and Wonder and Home Pride bread will be gone.
Russ Fern, manager of the Acme Fresh Market on West Market Street in Akron tells AkronNewsNow his shelves are already almost empty of Hostess products. " Right now I have no Twinkies in here at all in inventory, Susy Q's are all gone, and Ding Dongs, I mean the whole line now is pretty well shot and gone."
A run on twinkies was reported nationwide, and at other Akron area stores as well, including the Hostess outlet store in Ellet.
Fern says Hostess Wonder and Home Pride wheat bread brands were the store's top bread sellers, and will be missed.
Fern is as shocked as the 18,000 Hostess employees who will now lose their jobs. He says he never expected that Hostess would go out of business. " That's an old icon. I've been around 37 years with Acme and never thought I would see that day," says Fern.
Russ Fern says it's likely another national baker will seize the opportunity to buy the iconic brand names from Hostess and some time in the future those familiar snack names could once again appear on the nation's grocery shelves.
