Students and faculty were evacuated from a building at the University of Akron Saturday morning after firefighters responded to a small flash fire inside a chemical lab.

Fire officials report five people were taken to area hospitals for treatment due to the smoke and chemical fumes caused by the fire in the College of Arts and Sciences building around 10 a.m.

The University of Akron sent an email to students, faculty and staff stating that the fire was quickly extinguished and the Akron Fire Department was able to evacuate the building for safety. The building has reopened and proper ventilation in the building has been restored.

There was no reported damage to the building.
