Intense flames destroyed an Akron home overnight and sent one firefighter to the hospital.

Akron fire officials report heavy smoke and flames were found coming from a home in the 800 block of Chalker Street around midnight.

Residents near the scene of the fire told firefighters that they believe everyone was evacuated from the home before fire units arrived.

The home was a total loss valued at $50,000. Fire officials say the homes surrounding the house fire were also damaged.

One firefighter was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
