Several employees from Akron General Medical Center were fired for violating privacy rules in connection with the alleged mercy killing of a patient inside an intensive-care unit.

The Beacon Journal reports the hospital has confirmed that a "small number" of employees were fired for accessing patient records in the shooting case. The employees violated hospital and federal privacy laws because they were not taking care of the patient at the time they accessed the records.

John Wise,66, of Massillon, is accused of fatally shooting his critically ill wife, Barbara, at the hospital on August 4.

Hospital spokesman Jim Gosky did not specify how many employees lost their jobs. He says it's an ongoing investigation.
