The Akron Marathon is Saturday which means several roads will be closed tomorrow morning starting at 5 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. - South Broadway Street will be closed between E. Bowery and University. S. Main Street will also be closed between W. Exchange and State Street.

Akron Marathon race director Jim Barnett says runners need to arrive early before the scheduled 7am start of the marathon. " We really do want to encourage our runners to get there early. The roads begin to close down at about 6am, and so you need to be parked and at that starting line prior to 6 in the morning," says Barnett.

Several thousand volunteers will be on hand to help make sure the marathon and half-marathon get off smoothly. Barnett tells WAKR's Ray Horner they are key to the marathon's success. " We spend quite a bit of time training these volunteers and have nearly 3,000 that are involved with our event. The volunteers are often coming back year after year working with us and helping so much. They are as excited and as thrilled as the rest of the staff and certainly the runners."

There is also a one mile Kids Fun Run that starts at the Spaghetti Warehouse at 9 tomorrow morning. Barnett says parents can register their children for the race at the Spaghetti Warehouse just before it begins.

WAKR's Aaron Coleman will provide live reports from the race course Saturday morning beginning at 7.
