Firefighters responded to a pair of suspicious vacant building fires that happened within minutes of each other in Canton Monday night.

Canton Fire Division Chief John Whitlatch says crews responded to the first fire at a vacant funeral home in the 1300 block of Ohio Avenue around 11:30 p.m.

A few minutes later, a fire was reported at a vacant house in the 1200 block of Harrisburg Road, about 100 yards away from the first fire.

The vacant funeral home sustained around $65,000 in damage including $25,000 to its contents. The vacant house sustained around $40,000 in damage to the structure.

Whitlatch says the suspicious fires appear to be arson. The cause is still under investigation.
