The Canton woman struck by a car on an area highway after she was released from the Stark County Jail over the weekend has been identified.

The Canton Repository reports Heather K. Smith, 29, of Uhrichsville, was found dead along U.S. 62 by a passerby around 6 o'clock Saturday morning.

Stark County Jail officials said she was released at shortly before 1:15 a.m., and was apparently struck about a half-hour later by a vehicle while she walking west along U.S. 62.

Her body was found a few blocks west of the jail in a grassy area. Police said the driver of the vehicle left the scene.

Police said Smith was arrested on felony theft and forgery charges and a misdemeanor charge of passing bad checks.
