Canton police say a woman released from the Stark County Jail late Friday night was found dead Saturday morning on an area highway.

The Canton Repository reports that the woman from Uhrichsville was found dead along U.S. 62 by a passerby at about 6 on Saturday morning.

Stark County Jail officials say she was released at shortly before 1:15 a.m., and was apparently struck about a half-hour later by a vehicle while she walking west along Route 62.

Her body was found a few blocks west of the jail in a grassy area.

Police say the driver of that vehicle left the scene.

The woman's name has not yet been released, and an autopsy is scheduled Sunday.
