AKRON, Ohio – If Saturday’s Division III state championship game was truly the last game Champion senior Lindsay Swipas ever pitches then there’s something to be said for going out on top. Swipas, who will be attending Ohio State University to study accounting without an offer to play softball, flirted with history in pitching the Golden Flashes (24-3) to their second straight state championship and fifth in program history in a 2-0 win over Bloom-Carroll. Swipas carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and had retired 10 straight Bulldogs (29-4) when senior Paige Reis led off the final frame with a base hit to left field. An error on the play put Reis at third base and suddenly Champion had gone from being on the verge of a no-hitter to having the tying run come to the plate. Copyright 2012 SportsInk.
