AUDIO Veteran Bonuses Will Take Time
11/4/2009 12:23:22 PM  |  Marcy Pappafava and Tina Kaufmann, AkronNewsNow.com

With the passage of Issue 1, a local Iraqi war veteran is excited to get the added bonus, but there will be a time lag until veterans receive their compensation.

Cory Bulgrin, of Akron, did two tours of duty in Iraq. He built roads for convoys and demolished buildings enemies were said to be hiding in. "The citizens of America, especially Ohio, try to do what they can for the veterans and this is just another pat on the back saying hey, we support you, thank you for what you do," says Bulgrin.

"We have to write the rules. We have to hire and train the staff to serve the veterans. We have to design, advertise and sell the bonds. We have to determine if the applicant is a qualified veteran in a particular area. We have to process the application," says Jim Gravelle, Director of Communications for the Ohio Department of Veterans Services.

Gravelle explains why the bonuses will be delayed

That means that it could take up to a year before they are even ready to accept applications. Those applications will be screened to include confirmation of military active duty service, dates, locations, and honorable status among other things.

Anyone who was on active duty for at least 90 days in a non-training capacity is eligible for a bonus though the amount will vary.

"For domestic service and anywhere else in the world except Iraq, Afghanistan and Persian Gulf it's $50 a month up to $500.  For the three combat zones, it's $100 a month up to $1000," according to Gravelle.

The money is a cumulative, one time payment.

Bulgrin believes other issues, like the casino issue, overshadowed this one. Regardless, the compensation will held especially with the holidays fast approaching.

Veteran's should contact their county veteran's service organization with any questions they have.

There is no money to account for yet. See above..."We have to design, advertise and sell the bonds. "

A year is actually a pretty agressive target given all of the set-up, applications, and verifications that will need to be done.
