AUDIO Court Upholds AMHA Political Canvassing Ban 11/3/2009 1:39:00 PM | Larry States, AkronNewsNow.com Akron's Metropolitan Housing Authority can continue to ban door-to-door political canvassing. advertisement Akron attorney Warner Mendenhall, his wife and the group Change Akron Now had challenged the AMHA ban on campaign canvassing and circulating a petition at the housing authority's 13 apartment complexes in Akron and Summit County. The U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio upheld the ban as constitutional and said the Mendenhalls and Change Akron Now had not offered enough evidence that AMHA was trying to violate their first amendment rights to free speech. AMHA Executive Director Tony O' Leary is happy about the ruling and protecting AMHA residents. "We are happy to see this ruling because it's very essential that we protect the safety and privacy of those who live in public housing."
The court ruled that the First Amendment doesn't guarantee access to property, simply because it is owned or controlled by the government and that the state, like a private property owner has the power to preserve the property it controls for the use to which it is lawfully dedicated.

One of the basest rights given all of us under our constitution is being infringed upon by these politically minded dictators, and we can do nothing to change it? Where is Obama to preach Yes We Can? Where is the change he promised in his campaign speeches? Why, when less than 20% of the population actually get out to vote, can we not go door to door to try and raise awareness for our causes? posted at 11/3/2009 7:30:24 PM (17624) misstia said:of course don and chrissie hynde going door to door at amha housing to tell people to vote no for the recall is okay according to them...it's when you want to present an opposing view that you have no rights in akron it seems to me....
