AUDIO Portman Seeks Return To Congress
 10/23/2009 12:02:36 PM  |  Larry States, AkronNewsNow.com

Republican Rob Portman is hoping to get back to Congress, this time as a Senator from Ohio.

Portman, a former congressman from Southern Ohio, left Congress to serve as a trade representative for the Bush administration and then as the president's budget director.

Portman, on the Ray Horner WAKR Morning Show, says strengthening education would be one of his top priorities, if he's elected. " If we don't have more of our kids doing better in math and science, we're going to continue to fall behind as a state, and as a country. So education is key to getting Ohio back in a position where we are a leader in terms of manufacturing, in terms of creating jobs and opportunities, rather than having kids leave our state." says Portman.

Portman says he gained valuable experience in the Bush cabinet about how the government works and doesn't work. He says there are huge challenges ahead for Ohio and the country, and he says if they're not addressed now, he fears the nation will dangerously drift off track.

Portman says he's concerned about what's happening to the nation's budget. He says he wrote a balanced budget and publicized pork barrel budget spending on-line as Bush's budget director. The result he says was a reduction in pork barrel spending.

Rob Portman will address the Akron Press Club October 29th at the University of Akron's Martin Center.

Portman is opposed by Republican challenger, northern Ohio car dealer Tom Ganley.

Democrats Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher, and Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner are vying for the same senate seat.
