Government Expands Jeep Gas Tank Fire InvestigationTim Boyle/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- Five million Jeep vehicles are under a new safety investigation.
There's no recall yet, but government safety investigators are trying to determine whether some older Jeeps have defective fuel tanks.  They're studying where the gas tank is positioned on 1993-2004 model Jeep Grand Cherokees, 1993-2001 Jeep Cherokees and 2002-2007 Jeep Liberties.  In a rear-end collision the concern is that the tank could catch fire.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said such fires "are more prevalent in the Jeep Grand Cherokee" than in similar vehicles.  Chrysler says it's not true and is confident no recall will be necessary.
