UN: High blood pressure, glucose a global problem

GENEVA (AP) -- A quarter of people aged 25 or over now have high blood pressure worldwide, and almost one in 10 has worrying levels of glucose in their blood.

The World Health Organization's tally of the latest global health statistics for the first time includes a look at blood pressure and glucose levels, two of the risk factors for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Officials in charge of compiling the yearly snapshot of statistics for the U.N. health agency say rich nations' exports to the developing world increasingly include disease risk factors.

Dr. Ties Boerma, director of WHO's health statistics, said tobacco use, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity "are no longer diseases of just affluent countries."
