White House acclaims exit of activist from China

CAMP DAVID, Md. (AP) -- The White House has welcomed the arrangement allowing a blind Chinese activist to leave Beijing and fly to the United States with his wife and two sons.

Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser, says the administration was pleased with the outcome of negotiations between the Chinese government and the State Department that allowed Chen Guangcheng (chehn gwahng-chung) to be allowed to travel.

Rhodes said, "We are pleased at this development." He spoke with reporters at Camp David, the presidential retreat where President Barack Obama is hosting the Group of Eight summit.
