Traffic wrecks have claimed 15 lives on Stark County roads this year - until this weekend when four more were added to the list.
Both drivers were killed in a head-on crash in Jackson Township Sunday evening. Lt. Ty Bissler says Jacob Posey, 20, of North Canton was passing another vehicle on Woodlawn Avenue N.W. at what witnesses described as a "high rate of speed." Posey successfully got in front of the other vehicle, but went too far before overcorrecting and winding up in the path of a car driven by Terry Metz, 52, of Jackson Township.
Metz was pronounced dead at the scene and Posey was pronounced dead at Mercy Medical Center a short time later. Metz's wife is still recovering at Mercy Medical Center from her non life-threatening injuries. Two passengers in Posey's car, ages 16 and 17, were treated for minor injuries and released.
Bissler says the crash remains under investigation.
State troopers are looking into another double-fatal crash. It happened in Waynesburg on Saturday when vehicles driven by Thomas McCaffrey, 70, of East Sparta and Earl Bush, 85, of Canton, crashed at the intersection of East Sparta and Battlesburg Street. As if that wasn't enough, a third vehicle plowed into the wreckage. McCaffrey and Bush were both killed. The other driver suffered minor injuries.
