An arbitrator has awarded Akron firefighters an effective two and a half percent pay raise.
Akron's Interim deputy mayor for labor relations Patricia Ambrose Rubright tells AkronNewsNow.
"It's approximately $125,000 more than the city's offer. Thats the difference between the 1.5% beginning April 1st and what the arbitrator awarded with the staggered 1.5% in January and July."
That would amount to a two step pay increase this year for Akron firefighters.
Rubright says the arbitrator did listen to the city's concerns in making the pay raise decision. " The arbitrator basically took into account not only the other cities and their firefighter pay, but also the financial condition of the city," says Ambrose-Rubright.
Ambrose-Rubright says the arbitrator also realizes that due to the city's current financial situation parity between the safety forces is not possible right now.
She says city officials will study the arbitrators report before deciding whether to accept or repeal it.
Akron firefighters union officials were not available for comment on the arbitrator's decision.
