Summit SWAT Officer Bitten By Snake During Standoff

Summit County Sheriff's deputies and a SWAT team were called to a home on Route 619 near Mayfair Road early Tuesday afternoon to try and talk a man with mental problems out of his house. One of the SWAT officers went behind the house, but never expected what happenbed next.

Summit County Sheriff Drew Alexander tells AkronNewsNow "One of the officers that went to the rear of the house inor near a wood pile was bitten by a snake, that he believed to be a Copperhead. We don't know that for sure. The snake went back into a hole."

Alexander says the officer was treated on the scene by Green paramedics and is now at Akron General Medical Center. His condition is unknown.

After about an hour the suspect in the house, who had been on the phone with negotiators, surrendered peacefully and was also taken to the hospital for observation.
