AUDIO Reaching Out To The Community 7/31/2009 3:57:13 AM | Tina Kaufmann, AkronNewsNow.com The school supply, personal care product, food and clothing giveaway and services LEAP fair, is almost here in Coventry Township. advertisement LEAP is a time to step away from the regular church services and stand out in the community, to not turn away from the poverty right in our area, rather to make a difference in the lives of others who may be less fortunate and show them they are loved. Cornerstone Free Methodist Church will host, for the third year, the LEAP Back To School Giveaway on August 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Pastor Brenda Young says the event served more than 1,000 people last year, "this year, I have no clue how big it will get, but I'm very excited about it." It's open to anyone who needs school supplies, bookbags, clothing and more. Only one request: children must be present with their guardian when they pick up the backpack filled with age-appropriate school supplies.
In addition, roughly 25 local social service agencies and providers will be on-hand during the giveaway to help serve as a one-stop shop with information and services for those families in need. They include the Akron Canton Regional Foodbank, Info Line, ADM Board, Wal-mart Vision, Open M ANGELS, Ohio Benefit Bank, HM Life Opportunity Service, The United Way, Pregnancy Solutions, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, Habitat for Humanity, Community Legal Aid, Child Guidance and Family Solutions, Greenleaf Family Services, Goodwill Industries, Ohio Job and Family Services, Akron Summit County Public Library, Project Learn, Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Summa Foundation, Ask The Doctor, Akron Children's Hospital and others.
"Hardly anyone could walk through here without finding a need that someone could help them with," says Young. Free lunch will also be served. Haircuts, vision screenings, Ask The Doctor health check-ups, free ultrasounds, legal advice, family programs, service sign ups, mammogram vouchers, utility and foreclosure referrals, applications for aid, jobs applications, screenings, free lunch, and a teddy bear picnic with free stuffed animals are some of the other things being offered for those in need who come to the event. If you would like to contribute school supplies, personal care products, clothing, food or anything else to the cause, you can stop by the church or call Cornerstone Church at (330) 644-3937 or (330) 351-2525.
Church volunteers, at all levels, will be donating their time this week throughout the community, visiting nursing homes, doing minor home repairs, house cleaning, building projects, blood drives, park clean-ups and other services around the Greater Akron area.
