Tuesday's Ballot Issues
 11/2/2009 6:38:01 PM  |  Tina Kaufmann, AkronNewsNow.com

A look at the local, regional and state issues this general election.

State Issue 1 looks to compensate Persian Gulf, Iraq & Afghanistan war veterans by issuing $200 million in bonds to roughly 200,000 heroes.

State Issue 2 is a state constitutional amendment proposing to: "create higher standards and tougher regulations on how safe our food with a focus on how the animals are treated that we harvest from."

State Issue 3 asks voters to allow casinos to be built in Cleveland, Toledo, Cincinnati and Columbus. It also calls on voters to agree to a 33% tax on the facilities, plus create a state committee to oversee gambling. County Executive Russ Pry thinks the issue will hurt Summit County business; Akron's Chamber of Commerce President, Dan Colantone, believes casinos would allow a regional approach to economic development.

In the Rubber City, voters will choose among six candidates for three open at-large Akron council seats. In other council races, Ward 8 will get a new face for city lawmaker either way the vote turns out. Only wards 1, 2, 7 and 10 are contested. The Akron School Board has four seats up for grabs with 8 vying for them. The board is in transition and battling declining enrollment while in the middle of an $800 million construction project to improve facilities.

Eight school districts are turning to voters for money to improve schools or build new ones. Springfield Local has said if voters don't approve three renewal levies, the district faces closure. Norton City Schools have a bond issue and levy appearing on the ballot. Tallmadge, Coventry, Manchester and Highland are asking voters for additional cash. Green and Barberton are seeking renewals. Just one charter amendment: Summit County voters will decide on the county engineer's position, whether the post stays an elected one, or, is tied into the executive's office. Other items on the ballot: Issue 5, which looks at changing the City of Akron recall process and making it tougher to hold a recall election. In New Franklin, voters will decide on changing the mayor's position from full-time to part-time.

Don't forget, Akron Public Schools students get the day off because some schools are used as voting sites.

Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

Issue #1 has my vote. Our Veterans need our support during and after their enlistment.

Issue 5, which looks at changing the recall process and making it tougher to hold a recall election.
VOTE NO! This stifles our rights and just protects the tyrant antics of rogue offcials.

i think issue 1 should include ALL veterans...i do not know why WWII, Korea, and Vietnam are excluded....and should the state be issuing bonds right now? i mean, i know the service people get screwed over by the government, VA, etc alot of times, but i think this is a questionable issue....can the state use the bond money for anything else? are they taking a fee? who's administrating it, etc etc etc....

only issue i am voting FOR is #3...

Wow! Lets hear it for the Summit County Republican Parties failure at fielding a full slate and fully funding candidates in Akron! Hip hip hurray! As usual Alex Arshinkoff fields only judicial candidates and makes it look like a winner! Pathetic to say the least. Me thinks someone is looking for favor in another court decision one of these days.

I still don't get it, I mean, you are so critical of government yet you support legalizing a monopoly on gambling?????? NO ON ISSUE 3!!!!!

i don't think it's a legalized monopoly on gambling....let's see, don't we already have legalized monopolies with our utilities?

I dont gamble, Ive never even bought a lottery ticket before BUT I have weighed it around so much to set my own thoughts aside of what I would or wouldnt do to think about our state as a whole. Ohio doesnt have many more options, we dont have alot of money coming into the state as much as we do going out or leaving for good. The people of Ohio are going to have to let issue 3 pass or change will never come.

I agree missfit.

I don't go on trips to gamble, but if I'm on vacation somewhere where there is one I might spend about 20 bucks on slots or something.

But I do know a lot of people who take weekend trips to WV, MI, etc...just to gamble. You constantly see bus trips going to these places. People are going to gamble if they want to, why not keep some of that money here? The extra jobs sure wouldn't hurt.

Misstia,
If you don't think it is a monopoly, then read the ammendment. It lists the exact tax parcels, and who owns then, and who can build a casino, and ONLY those places and people.

I want to see gambling passed, but I want to see it everywhere, not just in some "special" places, owned by the ammendment's backers.

Misstia,
I am going to grab something out of my grandmother's playbook for this one.

Just because everybody else is jumping off a cliff should you do it too?

Not all other states have a constitutional monopoly on gaming. Most are controlled by a state gaming commission, and licenses are sold to start a casino.

ah, thanks for the clarification, i did not know that....i knew about state gaming commissions, but i thought-wrongly apparently-that this would be similar....i'll go read some more before i go vote on this....

haha...i wouldn't jump off a cliff cuz i'm afraid of heights!! :-)

Casinos will keep gamblers heremoney AND jobs here. Even if people come from out of state to work here as the "NO" campaign claims, these are people moving to Ohio and paying taxes in our cities! In regards to the 33% tax rate, With Ohio's economy, we can't afford to wait for an issue that has the highest taxed casinos! (The 33% that will happen with this issue falls about in the middle of tax rates across the country) Yes, the Issue lists the properties that Casinos will be allowed to be built on, but I see at least five different owners of these numerous parcels. (Maybe they are all related somehow, I don't know) In Cleveland, they are all places near downtown that are desolate right now. I think the time is right to vote YES! :)
